Ingredients Articles Updated - Concerns with Salmon Meal

Postby Kmuda » Sun Nov 04, 2012 12:03 pm

The fish food ingredients overview has been updated with the below listed text to reflect concerns with Salmon Meal, Whole Salmon Meal, and Whole Salmon.

Studies conducted by the University of Albany’s Institute for Health and the Environment have identified significant contaminant levels in farmed salmon. “In particular, four substances that have been well studied for their ability to cause cancer-PCBs, dioxins, dieldrin, and toxaphene-were consistently and significantly more concentrated in farmed salmon.” Contamination is significant enough that the human recommendation for the consumption of farmed salmon is reduced to a “one-half to one meal per month-based on U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) consumption advisories for these contaminants. A meal was considered to be an eight-ounce portion.”

It can be safely assumed that a large majority of the Salmon Meal found in fish foods originate from farmed salmon. Prepared dried foods fed to farmed salmon are the suspected cause. Further human recommendations are to remove the skin and fats prior to cooking as this is where a majority of the contaminants will be stored. The skin and fats will be a primary component of Salmon Meal.

Details of the study can be found here:
http://www.albany.edu/news/releases/200 ... _risks.htm

I am currently evaluating if this concern is significant enough to downgrade ratings on individual reviews for foods using Salmon Meal or Whole Salmon.

EDIT: Another round of emails sent. They've (as in the fish food manufacturers) have probably created a delete rule on my email address by now.

Zoo Med has replied back. They only acknowledge what we already knew, that they use "domestically sourced Salmon". No acknowledgment of farmed salmon or declaration of wild salmon. Just that it is "domestically sourced".

I have to tell you that it gets frustrating dealing with the fish food companies. You distinctly get the impression that they all have something to hide. But when you think about it, they all do have something to hide. It is difficult getting a straight answer.

So they are farm raised.... I mean if they were caught wild then we would know because it would be to their advantage to state it - they would do so willingly.

I am continuing to research this. Thus far, food ratings have not been downgraded as a result. I don't know if they will be, other than they go into the classification of can't be a 6 star if using Salmon.

Part of the issue I'm having is that there was an retaliation onslaught from the Salmon industry to the University of Albany study. I am trying to weed my way through all of that to determine if they come up with any more information than attempts to slam the messenger. These guys (University of Albany) just went to 700 stores in 700 cities and bought a salmon, took it back, tested it, and reported the results. Thus far, none of the counter attack has done anything similar. They've just assaulted the University's method. They are doing less to dispute the Universities findings than they are to dispute that it really doesn't apply (unless you live in one of those 700 cities  ) or they are arguing the health benefits out weight the health risks.

Don't look behind the curtain Dorthy!

I received a reply from Omega Sea (Omega One). Per their reply, the "Whole Salmon" utilized in their fish meal is Wild Caught Salmon, not farmed salmon.
