Uncomfortable Jawfish

Postby MonarchzMan » Fri Aug 31, 2012 11:05 pm

So I got a new jawfish on tuesday, and it appears as though it is very uncomfortable in the tank. I don't know why, but it has not done any digging, and a few times I've seen it try to jump out of the tank. As best as I can guess, it is not happy with the situation. Like I said, I really don't know why it hasn't started digging yet. I've thought about making an artificial tunnel with PVC hoping that he'll take that up and get a little more comfortable in the tank.

As anyone had this issue with a jawfish? My last one clouded up the tank the first few days that I put it in with all of its digging. This one seems really strange that it won't dig. Advice?

You have more experience with saltwater fish than I do I think. I've had a pair of clowns for a year and a half, and that's about it. A few talbot damsels and a six line wrasse.

What other fish do you have in the tank right now? Anyone harassing him? How are the nitrates?

Well, I think that the artificial tunnel did the trick. He wasn't happy about my putting him in there (I had to grab him in my fist and basically point him down the tube). But after 20 minutes, I saw him clearing out some sand out of the tube, and he's doing to typical in and out that I would expect. I think the big issue was not that he did not have a spot where he could comfortably hide.

I've got the jawfish, a clownfish, a hawkfish, and two firefish in the tank. I really like the hawkfish. He patrols the tank and is really curious about everything. Unfortunately, he has a beef with the firefish for whatever reason, so they've been hiding since I put the hawkfish in. I'm hoping they'll get used to each other over time. The firefish were nervous and secretive when I first put the clownfish in (and he chased them), but they had figured out their issues just before I added the jawfish and hawkfish.
