5g stocking ideas?

Postby plowkill » Tue Jan 08, 2013 3:51 pm

Got my kid a 5g Marineland Eclipse for his birthday. It seems to be an easy starter kit with a bio wheel already installed. Any ideas on a certain fish or two that I should persuade him into getting that would be easy to maintain and very hardy? I’m thinking gold fish but maybe there’s some more attractive fish we could look into.

Not a gold fish, they grow too large and make too much waste for a 5g tank.

A single betta and a mystery snail.
5 neons
5 harlequin rasboras
4-6 female guppies(since they are practically born pregnant expect babies)
3-4 mollies or platies

Thanks for the recomendations, those are way better choices than what I was thinking :D
I passed the info on to his mom, and sent some Tetra Safestart and a bottle of Prime with it. My son lives with her out of state so I wont be there to help him set it up. All I can do is make sure they have the stuff that works and make recommendations.

Hopefully I dont get an excited phone call on his birthday saying Hey Dad I got an Oscar, knife fish, sucker fish, and a Jack Dempsey! I have a feeling thats whats going to happen

Update:

Tank and all the supplies got there in time for his big day. I got a phone call with my son being super excited about being able to have fish. They set the tank up and let it run for a day then got 2 Mollies and a snail so that he could show off his tank at his bday party. Apparently the snail didn’t make it one day (don’t know if the fish got him but I wouldn’t think the Mollies would do that). Anyway I got a call this morning the pump went out on the filter so now the tank is without filtration.

I said to go to pet smart and get a sponge filter to run in the mean time but I might as well of been speaking Spanish because his mom could not grasp the concept of going to pet smart and picking up the simple pieces to get one running. So back to Amazon and ordered a pump, filter, and tubing for him and said for her to change part of the water every day till it comes in or can get filter fixed.

I wrote the store I bought it from and explained the issue; I know Marineland has an excellent customer service so hopefully this problem will get fixed. I told his mom that if she wanted to just go ahead and buy him a new tank and I would pay for it then I’ll just pick the old tank up on my next visit and Ill fix it and put it on my desk at work.

Wish I were there to just take care of it... frustrating :|

The Mollies could have gotten the snail. But most likely not. More likely an environmental factor (change in water chemistry or drastic temperature difference)

Mystery/apple snails are great fun. I had one reach the size of a crab apple I had that snail for probably 5 years. Tell your ex, if she wants to try again, to look for a smallish one that's shell is uniform in color and is attached to the glass or decor in the tank it is coming from. Snails need a calcium source to grow and maintain their shells. I like to add clean egg shells to my snail tanks. In a 5 g with one snail, one crushed up egg shell a month should be sufficient.

She said she found it dead in the tank with its shell all cracked and broken, but that was about the extent of her description.

Sounds like the snail got in the filter impeller? Mollies are a good choice. They are usually very hardy and active.
