Sorry for the delayed response.

Short answer is yes you can. Just make sure to allow enough time to mix the salt in so salinity is stable before you add it to the tank. You also want water temp to be a close match.

People use RODI units to 'purify' their water source. It removes everything. Any ammonia, nitrite, or nitrate, removes chloramines, chlorines and phosphates. And people who are running high powered lights for reef tanks want to have all of that removed or it will just cause a lot of algae. If you are only running a fish only tank with a lower powered light then its not as necessary.
