When I got home from work (late) on Tuesday, I noticed my oscar and severum where kind of hiding together in the back corner of their tank like they'd been spooked. Very unusual for them. The glass felt cold, but it was like 15F out, snowing and blowing. I felt the water and it was cold to the touch. The water temperature was 67-68F. Uh oh! The heater had a constant green light, but nothing was happening. All I had as spares were a cheap generic marineland 50w and 100w that had both come with kit tanks at one time. I put the 100w in there just to hopefully add some heat.. The 100w took the tank up to about 71-72F over about a day. I had no way to go out and get another heater until late the next day.

Wound up picking up a standard 200w Aqueon (glass) heater from Petco for $39, and this was after 20% off (Ugh..)

Upon further investigation on the Aqueon pro, I had it sitting on the work bench in the basement over night. I plugged it in to troubleshoot and noticed a bead of water forming from what appears to be a seam on the tip. As the water bead contacted my skin, I was feeling a strong electrical tingling from that spot as well.

I had the Aqueon pro in service for two years and never had the dial end under water. I still have the receipt and box from when I mail-ordered it form the Docs. $22.99. Quite the deal at the time. Per the paperwork, they do have a lifetime warranty. I may try to pursue it.

I'm not knocking the product. Failures happen. I'm just sharing my experience given how highly recommended these heaters are.

Makes me wonder if they were getting shocked a bit. The two fish were cowering in the opposite corner from where the heater was when I discovered the issue. They came out to investigate when I pulled the failed heater and put in the temporary one.

I'm not sure it it had anything to do with it, but a few days prior, we had a power outage at the house that lasted 4hrs. It was about 12degF out, super windy and snowing. After about 1-2hrs, I fired up my cheap little harbor freight tools 2-stroke 800/900 watt generator and alternated it between my heated tanks with a long extension cord routed through the house until the power came back on..

It's very hard to get a heater to last forever/ The reasons are twofold. First off, they simply are not made like the used to be, which is why I switched over to Sera Heaters. it's the one heater that looks like it was made 20 years ago. The second reason is our on failures. Leave a heater running during a water change, even if only half the heater is exposed, you are shortening the life of the heater. Especially the hard plastic heaters like the Aqueon Pros.

I still have an Aqeon Pro up and running. Been going for the last 5 years or so. It's in the one tank that I have to pay extra special attention to in getting the power turned off during a water change because of the sump.

Mine has never been left powered up during a water change. Everything gets unplugged.

Good news is, I called Central Garden and Pet's warranty number. All Aqueon heaters have "limited lifetime" warranties. Very nice folks to deal with. All I had to do was scan and email them the original sales receipt and they'll supposedly send me a replacement heater! They didn't even want the failed one back.

I totally lucked out on that one! I had the box with the receipt stuffed in it down in the basement with other miscellaneous aquarium hardware. Still got the box/receipt for the 100w Marineland heater on my 29g . I'll test United Pet Groups warranty effectiveness when that one goes. My other heaters? Not so much. No receipts or whatnot.

Thanks for letting us know about your aqueon pro failure and the experience you had with the warranty. I'm glad you didn't lose any fish.

Thanks Tarheel. That brings up a good point. What is the point at which damage can be done to something like an oscar or severum due to low water temp? I normally keep their tank at ~75F and it got down to ~67F. They seemed a little spooky, which is odd for them, but that faulty heater could have been throwing some stray voltage into the water.
