I got this fish in January or February 1990. He was first raised with another Kissing Gourami in a 10 gallon tank, that quickly became a 20 gallon, then 40 gallon, then 55 gallons. He's lived with Discus, Angelfish, Oscars, and even a Red Tailed Catfish. You can read more about him here. He's 24 years old, still going strong (as you can see), still the Kung Fu Kisser, and the master of his tank.

120g - Tiger Oscar, Parrot Cichlid, SDs | 55g - 24 Year Old Kissing Gourami
55g - Angelfish/Bolivan Rams | 40g GBRs - 20g Apistos
65g Blackwater Planted Discus Tank
4 Cats, 2 Shelties, 1 Rat Terrier, 1 wife, 1 old lady, 1 sub-adult, 1 rug rat.

Most of the literature claims a 4-8 year life span. I've found several examples of 15 years plus on the Internet but mine is the oldest I am aware of, so far. I'm hoping he holds on for another couple of decades. After all, I will not live long enough to get another one and I have forgotten what life is like without one.

I expected him to have a gray beard. I know how you feel about naming fish, but does this one have a name?

P.S. You're siggy needs updating.
Kinda hot in these rhinos...

Nope. No name. He's the "Kissing Fish".

Yep, my sig does need updating. I've lost two cats.... another 2 cats the Kissing Fish has outlived and the Kissing Fish's age needs updated.

Yep... 1 Wife, for 29 years. I've considered trading her in for a younger version though.

Many people coming to this forum only think they want an Oscar. Let's compare.

Wet pet rowdiness: check for both Oscars & Gourami.

Good in a community tank: Oscars? Heck no.

A 55 gallon tank is sufficient: bare minimum for a solo Oscar.

Hearty: if you've ever had a pitting issue with an Oscar it's not the first word that springs to mind.

It's hard to avoid the conclusion that the Gourami is a better recommendation for some aquarists.

The oldest known photo of my Kissing Gourami. This photo predates digital photography. I believe it was taken with one of those cameras where the film came in a rotating cartridge like the 3d-click viewers.

I don't exactly remember this time frame. There is obviously a blue discus in the tank but I don't remember having any blue discus without the very large pair of adult Brown Discus. The Kissing fish spent the the first decade of his life with Discus. He probably thinks he is one.

I don't see his brother (or sister). So he had already harassed him (or her) to death.

I do remember the cat. The cat's name was Milk Shake. He died in 1995, so the photo predates 1995. I still have the tank. I believe that is the 40 gallon tank that is still in my garage in need of a reseal.
