Hello,
Haven't been on the forums in awhile, my tank has been trouble free for quite some time. I've had this oscar, Steve, for five years. He's always been healthy. He's in a 150 with six silver dollars and a severum. I just did a water change on Wednesday. Yesterday I went to feed him and I noticed he seemed agitated. Like he sometimes does with bright lights or if I am wearing the wrong color shirt or he see's his own reflection. His mouth was slightly agape but he was not attacking his reflection, just sitting there.

On close inspection one of eyes seemed to be popped out a bit like popeye. On closer inspection his jaw on that side is also injured pretty badly. The eye itself does not seemed damaged, I believe it's popped out due to swelling from behind. It looks like he injured himself by running into something or got caught somewhere. The main piece of decor is a large piece of driftwood. I could see this being possible, he and my previous Oscar had injured themselves before but nothing like this. He didn't eat last night and I don't even know if he can eat.

Fish heal very fast in excellent water and I've seen some gruesome injuries on the internet, but this is among the worst of them, worst I've seen personally for sure. Can he recover? Is there anything I should be doing other than CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN water?

I will try to get pictures. It makes me sad looking at him.

Thanks!

If the wound is open, I would add kosher or rock salt (same as aquarium salt) at a concentration of 3 tbsp/5gal.
This helps prevent your fish from absorbing water at the wound site (osmoregulation).

It's definitely open at the jaw joint. I didn't see bone but it's hard to tell. It looked very fresh.

Is my calculation correct that I should add 5.625 cups of salt?

That's (150g/5)x3=90tbsp. Is that right?

That would be correct.
I would add about 1/3 at a time, dissolving it in a large pitcher of lukewarm water before adding to the tank.

If your fish heals quickly, you won't need to do anything to remove the salt other than continue your waterchange schedule.
If your fish requires salt longer term, simply replace the salt you remove during the water change, e.g. if you do a 50% w/c, add 45 tbsp (2.8125 cups) during/after the waterchange to replace what you removed.
Os typically heal up pretty quick, I've seen some pretty good gashes heal up as soon as 4-5 days.
