Beneficial bacteria resides on your substrate and hardscape as well, but obviously not in as great a number as in your bio media. I'd watch your parameters and be ready to do extra WCs if needed.

But, with several tanks and filters on hand, you can pinch some media from every other filter, add to the Malawi filters and you are good to go. I found that in a sealed canister, after 23hrs power out, I had no serious loss of bacteria. Hobs media not so friendly

My hobs are all matrix or lav....other than ac10 sponge
Even on other tanks with penguins...back two are shell carts packed with lav...

Thanks ...I'll check everything in am...I can only change 25% at a time on this tank with a 35g barrel
I'm looking for a new 50g drum on line....so I can do more at one time...
Was a dumb mistake...I was doing two tanks at once...

Temp is back to normal...

You work so hard...one dumb mistake can really hurt...
