Does it make sense to put bioballs in the overflow box leading to my sump? Those pipes then drain through filter socks into the first compartment. Seems like bioballs are used after socks but maybe I'm wrong or maybe there is a reason to have a specific order. Any thoughts?

You want to mechanically filter before bio. Dirty or even partly clogged bioballs are not working as efficiently as possible. Water from sump should pass thru the bio filtration last before re-entering the aquarium. Same application even in the smallest hob filter.

Agree with north. Bioballs in the last chamber of sump after your mechanical filtration.

Submerged bio balls are a waste of Media capacity. They are made for tickle filters and bucky showers and for more airation.
The biological worth of this is minimal and very limited in your planed combination.

If you want pre filtration before water enters your sump cut an 10 ppi sponge into shape and put it in the Overflow so that water need to pass it before getting in the overflow pipe.

Bio balls aren't a waste, but they certainly are not the most efficient bio media out there. Lots and lots of people still use them and they are effective.
