I'm in the market for a larger HOB for one of my tanks and was wondering if anyone has any experience with these? When it comes to HOBs I've used all the big names and some no-names over the years but always seem to go back to using nothing but Aquaclear because of their reusable media and the flexibility of using whatever media you want. I've got a few AC70s an AC30 and a 110 currently in use. My only complaint with Aquaclears is they can be noisy and the pump/impellers are finicky. Sometimes need a flick to start, etc.

There are some decent youtube videos of these new Seachem Tidal HOBs. They look really nice and have some great features. They've got a removable media basket, sort of similar to AC, but only seem to offer a small coarse blue sponge in the bottom of the basket. It's rinsable/reusable. Then it looks like they come with a bag of Seachem matrix for the bio portion, a carbon bag if you wan't chemical media, etc.

My concern is the apparent lack of mechanical media, aside from the custom fit piece of blue sponge that comes with the unit? I suppose you could fill the basket with floss or the likes, but that's not nearly as easy as the big sponge blocks all aquaclears use.

At the end of the day, I guess there's pros and cons to all HOBs!

Whelp.. I'll be the guinea pig I guess. Tough for me to decide between another AC110 or try this new Seachem 110, but for $62.06 all in for a Seachem Tidal 110, I'll try one.

It's for my goldfish 55g.

They are manufactured by Sicce, so you can feel good that it will be a quality built device. Please let us know what you think once you get one. I'm a bit intrigued myself.

EDIT: I would put a layer of blue padding between the sponge and the biomedia.

No freshy :P , its just that in the rest of the hobby world the HOB is an relict of the aquatic bronze periode. The only real market is North America while I never saw them on my vatications in asian countrys and i was in 3 LFS in Japan i was on the Chaunak market in Thailand and in Hongkong. In Europe the HOB Design died out about a decade ago, you only find the ones for nanotanks if you are lucky, the big ones like the AC110 or here named AC500 was stopped producing in the late 90s or early 2000s.

But i am still curious. The biological and ecological point of an HOB is more or less not important but what is interesting is the real Liters per hour. The box says 2000 Liters and for 12 Watt of power useage this would be not bad at all for a unit that have to work against gravity, it would be nice if you can measure the real output.

Toom, what's the preferred method over there, canisters and sponge filters? On the particular tank I plan on running this HOB on, tank is floor level with no floor space near by for a canister. I have an AC70 on it and a sponge bubbler filter, but it's not quite enough.

The AC110 is also right around 12watts of power consumption. I just hope I don't regret not getting an AC110 over this Seachem unit.
