Where are the 6 Star Foods?

Written by Kmuda. Posted in 6 Star Foods

Thus far, only a single 6 star food has been identified. Criteria for a 6 star food is as follows

  1. Absence of toxic, potentially toxic, and controversial ingredients
  2. Aquatic Animal protein and Preferred Aquatic Plants as the primary ingredients, comprising at least 80% of the food
  3. Limited use of grains, binders, and fillers, aka non-preferred protein sources, comprising a maximum of 20% of the food.
  4. A fully nutritious food to include necessary vitamins and minerals with natural sources preferred.
  5. Use of "Whole Aquatic Animal Meal" or "Whole Aquatic Animal" in sufficient quantity.

While two foods has meet a majority of these criteria, only one has met them all. This is the sad aspect of our hobby. Unlike dog and cat food, where consumer demand has resulted in the availability of holistic foods that comply with the above criteria, very limited demand exists for fish food and as a result, no such foods are difficult to come by. They are, after all, only fish. So the question is.... is there a market for such a food? Are we, as the purchasing public, willing to spend more for such a food? Thus far, the answer to that question is an emphatic no.

Hopefully, at some point in the future, our hobby creates a demand for a holistic food that meets our criteria. Without the demand, it will never occur, and we are forced to feed a diet that presents potential health risks to our fish.

If are of a like mind, please use the contact links provided below to notify the fish food companies that you would prefer a food that meets the above description. I am of the opinion that there is a market waiting on someone to fill it.
