New Life Spectrum Grow Sinking Pellets Ingredients Analysis
This produict differs from the standard NLS formula by containing more fish meal than krill meal (Fish Meal has more protein), more Chlorella Algae than Ulva Seaweed (again, to improve protein numbers) and increased supplementation of Omega-3. Higher protein equates to improved growth.
Whole Fish meal is the first listed ingredient and while we have no way of measuring the quality of the meal being used, we’ll give NLS the benefit of the doubt, confirmed by the results of using this food and its reputation, that a quality meal is utilized.
Krill Meal, the second ingredient, is an excellent source of proteins, amino acids, omega 3 oils, and color enhancing carotenoids. The Krill Meal utilized in NLS foods are manufactured from preferred Antarctic Krill.
Whole Fish meal is the second listed ingredient and while we have no way of measuring the quality of the meal being used, we’ll give NLS the benefit of the doubt, confirmed by the results of using this food and its reputation, that a quality meal is utilized.
Chlorella is a genus of single-cell green algae belonging to the phylum Chlorophyta. It contains Carotenoids like vitamin A (beta-carotene) and alpha-carotene, and lutein, Powerful antioxidant vitamins C, D, E, and even the elusive vitamin K. A higher concentration of chlorophyll than any other plant on planet earth, the super antioxidant alpha-lipoic acid , B-vitamins - thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), pyridoxine (B6), niacin, pantothenic acid, folic acid, vitamin B12, biotin, choline. It contains minerals including phosphorus, calcium, zinc, magnesium, and iron, and more protein per ounce than steak.
Ulva Seaweed has been tested on fish in several scientific studies with positive results. It possesses pigments which contain strong anti-oxidants, contains 28% protein, which is comprised of all 9 essential amino acids including Lysine, is rich in magnesium, potassium and calcium, and contains essential vitamins: Vitamin A, B and C.• It is especially rich in Vitamin B-12
Spirulina is sometimes called "The Most Nutritious Food on the Planet". Rich in raw protein and seven major vitamins: A1, B1, B2, B6, B12 (one of the best natural sources for B12, although the bioavailability of its B12 is in dispute by many researchers), C and E. It naturally contains beta-carotene, color enhancing pigments, and a whole range of minerals. In addition, Spirulina has 62% amino acid content and contains all essential fatty acids and eight amino acids required for complete nutrition. It is easily digested due to the fact that Spirulina cells do not have cellulose walls. Spirulina is only available in a dry form, so regardless of how it is listed on the ingredient label (spirulina meal, dried spirulina, or spirulina), it's ordering in the ingredient list should be accurate.
Subsequent inclusion of Kelp, Garlic, Scallops, Omega-3 Fish Oil, Wakame Seaweed, and Spinosum Seaweed, provide additional healthful benefits.
With four high quality preferred protein sources listed within the first five ingredients and 11 of of 13 primary ingredients being preferred aquatic meat and plant products, there is more than ample confidence in the preferred protein content of this food.
While this food does not utilize Menadione Sodium Bisfulfite (synthetic vitamin K) or artificial colors, and does not list Ethoxyquin (or other non-desired preservatives) within ingredients, I have not been able to procure an Ethoxyquin free statement from the manufacturer. However, at worse, we can assume only trace levels of Ethoxyquin exist.
Oscarfish.Com Rating: 5.5 Stars
The high quality of preferred "whole animal" proteins in this food, along with minimal use of terrestrial starches, combined with extensive use of aquatic plants (algae, seaweed, kelp) would easily justify rating this as a 6 star food. However, absent an Ethoxyquin Free statement from the manufacturer, I cannot apply a 6 star rating.
Very little, if anything, seperates Northfin and NLS. NLS may even be a better product due to the healthful benefits of Chlorella Algae and Ulva Seaweed. The reason Northfin has recieved a 6 star rating and NLS remains in the 5 star category (5.5 stars) is that I have been able to recieve an "Ethoyxquin Free" statement from Northfin, to include absence of Ethoxyquin in pre-manufacture meals. I have not been able to recieve an Ethoxyquin free statement from NLS. Site rules in ingredient ratings is that to achieve a "6 star" rating, the manufacture must identify an Ethoxyquin free food.
Understanding Oscarfish.Com Ratings:
This review is an attempt to analyze the ingredients, rating them from 1 (worst) to 6 (best) in an effort to judge quality based upon three simple criteria.
- Absence of toxic, potentially toxic, and controversial ingredients
- Aquatic Animal protein and Preferred Plant Proteins as the primary protein sources
- A fully nutritious food to include necessary vitamins and minerals with natural sources of vitamins and minerals being preferred.
These basic concepts apply:
- Any food that utilizes Ethoxyquin, BHA, or BHT as preservatives, cannot rate higher than a 4 star food.
- Use of artificial colors prevents rating higher than a 4 star food.
- Any food that utilizes Menadione Sodium Bisulfite (Synthetic Vitamin K, aka K3) cannot rate higher than a 5 star food.
- Inclusion of the “Whole Fish”, or “Whole Krill” (in meal form or not) is preferred over fish meal or krill meal.
- In order to achieve a 5 or 6 star rating, the quality of the meal must be known.
- In order to achieve a 6 star rating, the “Whole Fish’ (or whole animal) must be used, either in meal form or in sufficient quantities outside of meal form.
- Inclusion of sufficient quantities of preferred plant proteins is a bonus with sufficient Spirulina content being a significant bonus.
- Use of prebiotics or probiotics is a bonus
