The primary ingredient is White Fish meal. White Fish Meal is comprised of pollock, hoki, hake, blue whiting, and cod. With a protein content of between 60% and 65%, it is a higher quality product than generic fish meal. While we have no way of measuring the actual quality and freshness of the meal being used, we’ll give Dianichi the benefit of the doubt, largely based upon the reputation of this food and the use of White Fish Meal, that a quality meal is utilized. The next two ingredients are spilt wheat products, which brings into question the actual primary ingredient of this food. If these two wheat products are combined, they may replace White Fish Meal as the 1st ranked ingredient.

The next three preferred proteins, Shrimp, Spirulina, and krill are listed at their wet weights. Once dried, as they must be for inclusion into a dry fish food, their weight will be substantially reduced, likely placing them further down in the ingredient list. However, with a limited total number of ingredients, this effect is minimized. A higher Spirulina or Krill content would be appreciated.

Brewers Dried Yeast is a by-product of the beer making process; this ingredient contains about 45% protein and is rich in Vitamin B. Is use in fish foods is as either as a protein source or a vitamin supplement. Studies do exist indentifying its capacity to improve fish growth rates. When used as a supplement comprising between 2% and 4% of the food, this is an acceptable product. When used as a primary provider of protein comprising 25% or more of the food it is less acceptable as protein digestibility concerns have been documented. Its use in this food would appear to fall below that threshold.

With five non-preferred proteins and four preferred proteins, even with three of the preferred proteins listed at their wet weight, there is sufficient confidence in the preferred protein level of this food.

Calcium montmorillonite clay is a recognized nutrient, detoxifying agent, and bactericidal. It contains 67 minerals, including calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, manganese, and silica as well as trace elements, those appearing in very tiny amounts. The mineral content being extremely high sets the stage for replenishing dietary deficiencies.

Powdered milk is added for additional proteins and as a source of calcium.

It is not possible to determine the quality of Vitamins and Minerals that are not listed aside from the phrase “vitamin mix” and “mineral mix”. It can be assumed the vitamin mix will contain synthetic vitamin K.

It is not known if this product contains Ethoxyquin as queries to the manufacturer have thus far not been answered, although their marketting claims to use "human grade products" that do not contain "harmful chemicals or fillers that may cause negative side effects such as kidney disease or cancer." This statement, at face value, would indicate an absence of Ethoxyquin and artificial colors.

Sufficient (assumed high quality) preferred proteins and use of Calcium montmorillonie clay borderlone justify, at minimum, a 4 star rating. Even if absent Ethoxyquin, likely use of synthetic vitamin K, limited preferred plant proteins, and the quantity of non-preferred protein sources, prevent it from being rated higher. We would need to validate that White Fish Meal, Spirulina, and shrimp comprise a larger majority of the finished pellet than does wheat germ, wheat flour, soybean meal, and brewers yeast in order to justify a 5 star rating.

This review is an attempt to analyze the ingredients, rating them from 1 (worst) to 6 (best) in an effort to judge quality based upon three simple criteria.

  1. Absence of toxic, potentially toxic, and controversial ingredients
  2. Aquatic Animal protein and Preferred Plant Proteins as the primary protein sources
  3. A fully nutritious food to include necessary vitamins and minerals with natural sources of vitamins and minerals being preferred.

  • In order to achieve a 6 star rating, the “Whole Fish’ (or whole animal) must be used, either in meal form or in sufficient quantities outside of meal form.
  • Inclusion of sufficient quantities of preferred plant proteins is a bonus with sufficient Spirulina content being a significant bonus.
  • Use of prebiotics or probiotics is a bonus
